Winter Career Kick-Off 2012--Calling All Students!

So, this is it. This is the semester where you really take control of your future. New Year’s Resolutions aside, you know that internship is within your reach. That co-op you’ve had your eye on? Yours. The scary abyss that is The Job Search? Starts today. This semester is when you begin to answer that one question, THE question: “So what are you doing after college?” This semester, laughing out loud does not seem as funny or appropriate an answer (was it ever appropriate?), so get your butt into gear and do this the right way: with help.

This semester, Career Services is taking things up a notch—and adding some extra incentives. Not only are there a gazillion events catered to your every need, worry and fear about your future, but now you get rewarded for being proactive…for starters, how does an iPad sound? Insert: the Winter Career Kick-Off 2012.

It’s really easy. Attend 4 events this semester (not difficult) and have your Winter Career Kick-Off Stamp Card stamped at the end of each event. Then, hand in your completed stamp card by March 1^st either at the 4^th event you attend or in the CSC office (Holthusen Hall, first floor) to be entered in a drawing for to win one of the following: an iPad, an MU Padfolio or a $10 Qdoba Gift Card! There are over 50 prizes up for grabs!

If you haven’t picked up or printed out your stamp card, it’s not too late! Take charge this semester and let Career Services help take the pressure off! So.... you have heard of speed dating and speed skating and speed racer and speedy gonzalez. And honestly you have probably heard of Speed Networking too; but have you actually done it?

This student/alumni program will include one-on-one networking with alumni and employers during a 30-minute speed networking. We will attempt to match students with professionals by industry.

A Busy February Ahead!

Happy (belated) New Year's everybody! We hope all of you had a great break and the start of the new semester is going well.

We here at Career Services have been busy over the course of the last month working to set up numerous helpful events to make the job or internship process that much easier for you. February may be a short month, but you can be sure that there will be no shortage of events for you to attend! We hope to see and help you all February (and every other month after)!

Wednesday Feb 3rd: Mock Interview Day

Looking to improve your interviewing skills before the big job or internship interview? Schedule a 30 minute mock interview with employers that regularly recruit Marquette students. What better way to find out how prepared you really are? Sign-ups are open now, so stop by our office in Holthusen Hall or give us a call at 288-7423 to reserve your spot. Space is limited, so sign up soon!

Monday, Feb 8th: Career Fair Prep Workshop (5-7pm)

Learn everything you need to know about successfully navigating a career fair from a recruiter. Hear about what recruiters look for, how to approach them, proper follow-up, and so much more. Bring your resume too and receive a critique from our staff while the session is underway. No reservation required, just stop by AMU 227. Did we mention there will be free food too?

Thursday, Feb 18th: Workforce Career Fair (4-8pm)

Looking for a job or internship? Come by our annual spring career fair in the AMU Ballrooms and meet prospective employers that want to meet you. Currently there are over 100 organizations registered, with more signing up each week. Many of these organizations will also be interviewing on campus later in the semester, so make that positive first impression.

Tuesday, Feb 23rd: Speed Networking with Alumni (5:30-7:30pm)

Get the opportunity to meet up to 50 Marquette alumni in one evening! Our speed networking events, this time held at the Wisconsin Club, allow students to get to know alumni who are looking to help you in your career. Space will be limited, so keep an eye out for registration announcements in the near future.

Now that we're all back in the swing of things, CSC is putting together an event filled week before the Career Fairs next week. There will be no shortage of opportunities to learn more about us over the next five days, so take full advantage and get yourself prepared for a successful job search now!

- Get your resume, cover letter, etc reviewed without having to set up an appointment. This service will continue on throughout the semester.

Extreme Makeover: Resume Edition; Daily 2pm-4pm, AMU First Floor
- Meet with a member of the CSC staff to get assistance with your resume in preparation for the Career Fair next week.

Career Fair Prep Workshop; Monday 9/14 5pm-7pm, Raynor Library Lower Level
- Learn how to make the most of your experience at the Career Fair from our staff and one of our most active recruiters. Bring your resume to have reviewed while you are viewing the presentation. Pizza will also be provided.

CSC Open House; Friday 9/18 11:30am-1:30pm, Holthusen Hall
- Not familiar with what CSC can do for you? Stop by our CSC Tailgate Open House to learn all about how our office can help you find and manage a career. There will be plenty of traditional tailgating games, and you can potentially win many prizes, including an iPod!

On Monday night we held our first speed networking event in conjunction with the Alumni Association. 100 students and 100 alums came out to mix and mingle, building their networks in the process. The Journal-Sentinel showed up as well to see how students are approaching this new job market.

Career Fair Today!

Just a friendly reminder that our WorkForce Career Fair is tonight in the AMU Ballrooms from 4pm until 8pm. We'll be hosting 111 employers, which is a great number with the state of the economy.

Make sure you stop by and talk with all the recruiters who want to hire you, because there's no such thing as a bad opportunity to meet people who could hire you!

Career Fair Prep Tuesday

Planning on going to the WorkForce Career Fair on the 19th?

If so, be sure to come to our Career Fair Prep workshop Tuesday night from 5-7 in AMU Ballroom B. Wade Krogwold from Direct Supply will be letting each and every one of you know what HR representatives are looking for in candidates at a career fair, as well as things they notice that will guarantee you don't get a call back.

We'll also be there to critique your resumes to make sure that you are as ready as you can possibly be on the 19th.
